Winter Preschool Activities

Looking for some "cool" Winter Preschool Activities? The cold winter months can be difficult in a preschool. Kids are cooped up for weeks on end in the classroom. Besides letting them run wild or creating an indoor playground, consider these 10 simple activities.
Classroom Snowman - You can't miss Mr.Snowman in your Winter Preschool Activities. Cut out one large circle from white paper, one medium-sized circle, and then a smaller circle. These need to be larger sized so the children can work together at decorating all of the circles with their names, handprints, or just coloring. When the children are finished you can staple the circles together and hang then snowman up somewhere in the classroom. Twig arms and a hat are optional.
Pretzel Snowmen - Push a marshmallow down on both ends of a pretzel stick then use pretzel sticks to create arms and raisons for eyes. Children can put this together on their own or the teacher can make them and present it as a fun snack.
Letter Snow -
Place two sheets of white paper together, fold them, and then cut them at the same time to create two snowflakes that are exactly the same. Do this to create enough sets of snowflakes to cover all the letters of the alphabet. For each set of snowflakes, write a capital letter on one and the corresponding lower case letter on the other. Arrange the snowflakes on tables all mixed up and have the children work together to match like snowflakes by finding corresponding upper and lower case letters.
Snowflake Matching Game - Write numbers on one side of precut or teacher-made snowflakes. Make sure there are two snowflakes with each number and arrange them number side down on a table. Allow children to take turns flipping them over, trying to find the matches.
Winter Treasure Hunt - Have children put on their coats, mittens, hats, and other winter attire and pretend that they are outdoors in the snow for a treasure hunt. Hide winter-themed items around the classroom and give clues for the children to find them as part of your Winter Preschool Activities.
Winter Dress Up - Split the class into 2 or 3 groups with one designated child per group as the one to be dressed up. Call out that you have just woken up and tell the kids what the weather is like outside your window. The kids have to put on the appropriate attire for the designated child so they are ready to go out in that weather. For instance, they may put a hat and gloves on the child if you say the ground is covered in snow.
Winter Play - You can always write a short play and give each child a couple lines to memorize over the course of the week. Allow parents to come in for the winter production on Friday.
Winter Coloring Pages - Get the kids to draw and color their favourite winter activities or winter holiday destination etc. You get some Free Winter Cloring pages here.
Winter Around the World - Compile information
and pictures about winter weather in different parts of the world and turn it into a fun Preschool Winter Activities classroom discussion.
Preschool Winter Science - Refer to our Preschool Science page for more cool inspirations.
Mitten Tree - Cut a tree shape out of a large sheet of paper and hang it in the classroom. Have children color cut-out mitten shapes and hang them on the bare branches. You can have them remove the gloves one by one over the course of weeks to symbolize the leaves falling from the tree in winter.
Puppet Theater - Make hand puppets from brown lunch bags featuring common winter characters, like a snowman, hat, mitten, etc. Allow children to pick a puppet and act out a play with one another. These will really be some fun winter activities for preschool.
Just remember to have fun, and do share with us your winter preschool activities!
