Preschool Science
Soap and Pepper Experiment

preschool soap and pepper

You really got to try this preschool science activity!

Your pantry has lots of things to play with in the name of science.

It is a really an awesome demonstration that would be great as a magic trick or as an idea for a preschool birthday party activity!

What you need :
your finger, bowl, liquid dishwashing soap, pepper, and water

Procedure :
1. Fill the bowl with water
2. Sprinkle some pepper above the water
3. Dip your finger in the water (to note that nothing special will happen)

Now for the fun part,

4. First, dip your finger in the liquid soap
5. Then dip your soapy finger into the bowl of water with pepper.
6. Watch as the pepper "magically" backs away from your finger

The scientific explanations :
The soap breaks the surface tension of the water, like popping a balloon. It is the water that moves, not the pepper that is floating on it.

Cool stuff!
