Harvest Preschool Activities

How about some bountiful Harvest Preschool Activities? The time for planting and harvest vary from place to place. When the crops are ready for picking, and the yield is ripe, it is time to harvest (pick) the foodstuffs for preservation and consumption. Traditionally many cultures look upon autumn as the time for harvest and your preschoolers will enjoy many different activities surrounding this theme.
Corncob Prints - This is a craft for the painters. Shuck and remove the kernels from the corncobs. Select different colored paints and put inside shallow pans. Next, lay out large sheets of paper for the preschoolers to use and have cob holders handy for the corncobs. Have the children take the corncobs and roll them into the paint(s) and roll onto the paper for different customized designs. This can be a great idea for any harvest party preschool activities.
Paper Bag Pumpkins - Stuff newspapers into the paper bags and tie the top closed with string or green ribbon. Have the kids paint the pumpkins from a selection of orange, green and black.
Hayrides - Find a local farm or park that offers hayrides for groups and take your kids on a nice ride. Add some sing-a-longs for fun while out on the wagon if you prefer, or just enjoy the day and educate the children on what they are seeing.
Scarecrow Plates - What good farmer doesn't have a scarecrow in his field? Have paper plates handy and shapes in the form of squares, circles and rectangles precut for the kids. Use raffia or straw for hair. Have the kids glue the shapes and hair onto the plates to create their own scarecrows.
Popcorn Math Activity - Color popcorn kernels with paint previous to class time by putting a drop or two of paint in a plastic bag and shaking the kernels inside to get them colored. Take pieces of paper and number 1-10 (or whatever quantity you prefer) and then have the kids glue the appropriate number of kernels onto the papers.
Fall Obstacle Course - Use bales of hay for the kids to climb or jump over for part of the course. Another part can have small pumpkins they can jump over and have them throw hula-hoops over larger pumpkins. Awesome outdoor Harvest Preschool Activities.
Squirrel, Squirrel, Scamper - This game is played like Duck, Duck, Goose but the words are changed. Have one person be "it" and go around the circle of kids saying squirrel, squirrel, scamper and whoever ends up with scamper chases "it" around the circle.
Fieldtrip to a Park - Preschool activities for fall harvest got to include a field trip, the kids can feed the ducks and observe squirrels. Teach the children about each animal - the characteristics, diet, and habits. This would easily be one of their favorite Harvest Preschool Activities.
Harvest Preschool Activities on Apples - Take the kids on a fieldtrip to an apple orchard. Here they can grab their own baskets and pick apples straight from the trees on their own. The preschoolers will be able to take the apples home when finished picking. Do see our Apple Preschool Activities for more tips.
Homemade Biscuits - To signify the harvesting of wheat, teach the children how to make easy biscuits as part of the Harvest Preschool Activities. Have them join in and mix the ingredients themselves before putting them into the oven. Here is a quick and easy recipe: Mix 2 1/4 cups of Bisquick® mix and 2/3 cup of milk together. Knead the dough ten times and roll out to be 1/2 inch thick, then cut with a cutter or dull knife. Bake in a 450ºF oven on an ungreased cookie sheet for 8-10 minutes.
Enjoy these warm harvest ideas with the preschoolers. Just remember they are at the age where they love to learn, so make everything fun and educational and you can't miss! Go to preschool activities on fall season for more Fall activity ideas.
