One of the easiest ways to get your little preschooler occupied is by using any free preschool printables.
Depending on the situation, you can either use free preschool printable worksheets or printable kids coloring pages.
Sometimes I will print out some preschool worksheets like simple math sheets , dot-to-dot etc. I think these printable alphabet preschool activities are important
not only for learning but for their hand and eye coordinations and movements.
1) Work on the child's memory first. Get them to memorize the preschool alphabet first before writing.
2) Never force your child into learning. Use the free preschool printables here as introduction , gently.
3) Never use learning or preschool worksheets as punishment.
Here is what we did to get our 4 years old to learn her ABCs.
We used the daily 20 minutes commuting time ( to the baby sitter's place ) to teach her alphabet using flash cards.
We will choose 5 alphabets and repeat them continuously for 2 days. Then we will swap for 5 new alphabets on the 3rd day.
And we repeated the whole process until she knows her alphabets by heart.
I think this technique works great and she managed to learn her A-Z and a-z within 2 months!
This is a great achievement for us considering English is not our first language. :) .
And speaking about languages, my humble opinion is that it is good to expose the kids
to as many languages as possible when they are little.
Get them to mix with kids of different background, attend play groups of other languages, read more books, learn some different kids’ songs etc.
Just give them some time without giving them any pressure .They have all the built in ability to pick up all the languages without mixing them up!
Well, you can even get them CD's on sign languages if you want :)
In our local community, it is quite common for children to be tri or quad lingual in very early stages.
However I do understand that different countries/cultures have different recommendations.
But if you are in US, learning Spanish is a good way to start being bilingual. You can get them simple books like
House-Casa Bilingual Interactive book to teach
simple everyday household words in English and Spanish.
If you prefer a more interactive way, you can try the
Audio CD Kit . To jump-start learning for pre-schoolers as they sing and participate in these bilingual songs and games and a rhyming game teaching names of animals, counting, directions, etc. Sung by native speakers these bilingual songs are a perfect introduction to the new language (English or Spanish).
