Black History Preschool Activities

Hope you would enjoy the all the Black History Preschool Activities listed here..

African Americans, previously referred to as "Blacks" because of the color of their skin, have played a great part in the history of America.

There have been politicians, doctors, lawyers, and inventors as well as writers, poets and vocalists. It is important while covering history to include this in the curriculum so that children understand the importance of every individual, regardless of color.

Black History preschool activities can be just the thing to parlay this information to the children.

Jackie Robinson -

Jackie Robinson was one of the greatest baseball players in history. Prepare t-shirt outlines and have sponge-painted letters spelling "DODGERS" with blue paint and a picture of Jackie for each child in the class. To begin the lesson discuss the kids' favorite sports.camping preschool activities

Explain to the preschoolers that Jackie won special prizes for playing baseball as well as he did and that some people didn't like him because of his skin color but that he had a lot of friends anyway. Read the children the story Young Jackie Robinson, Baseball Hero.

Ask questions such as what did Jackie play, why was he called bad names and offer the children a t-shirt already prepared or have them prepare it themselves.

Martin Luther King -

Martin Luther King, Jr. is so well known for what he stood for and tried to change that people know of him the world over. Teach the children about unity and dreams.

You can have the preschoolers share their dreams with one another while teaching them what a dream is and what MLK's dream was. For the unity portion of the lesson have construction paper, pencils, glue and scissors at the ready. Have the kids trace their hands on the paper using black, white, red, yellow and brown paper representing the different skin tones.

Hang them side by side in your classroom when completed. As part of your preschool activities for black history, explain to the children about unity and how MLK's march joined hands together against one cause.

Preschool Activities on Black Inventors -

Inventors include Garrett Morgan who invented the traffic light, Sarah Boone the ironing board, George Sampson the clothes dryer and George Washington Carver peanut butter.

Cover these inventors and their products in a lesson. You can have the kids decide on an invention of their own and draw it out as an activity. Have snacks with peanut butter and crackers to munch on. Play a game of "Red Light Green Light" to keep them moving. See our Preschool Games pages.

Freedom -

Peace and freedom ideas can be taught as black history preschool activities as well. Put together some angel paper craft activities by printing out some templates and have the children color them in different skin tones as a way to show peace and faith.

For freedom and peace gather up a toilet paper roll for each child and print templates for a bird head, wings and tail and glue together some Doves.

Stories -

Read stories as part of your black history preschool activities and have color pages handy regarding the Underground Railroad, Slavery, and the famous bus ride of Rosa Parks.

Explain the thinking of the people during the time periods that these events happened and why it was important to history. Explain what has happened since as a direct result of these actions.

Include these activities as part of your Black History Month preschool activities as well. Challenge the children on what small difference they can make in the world and how it can blossom into something bigger.

It is essential that the children learn both the good and the bad during their black history preschool activities so that they can see where we came from and where we are going as a whole in this world.

It is imperative the children understand that they themselves are capable of anything.
